The Austin Symphony Orchestra closes its 100th classical concert season on Friday & Saturday, May 13 & 14 presenting pianist Jon Kimura Parker performing one of classical music’s most beloved concertos. Concerts are being proudly sponsored by Frost Bank and Slack & Davis, LLP.

Menotti – Sebastian (ballet suite)
Grieg – Piano Concerto in A Minor, Op. 16
Tchaikovsky – Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, Op. 36

The evening begins with Gian Carlo Menotti’s ballet suite Sebastian, being performed in honor of the composer’s centennial. Center stage then belongs to Jon Kimura Parker. Internationally acclaimed concert pianist Jon Kimura Parker’s extraordinary career has taken him from Carnegie Hall and London’s Royal Festival Hall to Baffin Island and Zimbabwe. A true Canadian ambassador of music, Mr. Parker has given two command performances for Queen Elizabeth II, special performances for the United States Supreme Court, and has performed for the Prime Ministers of Canada and Japan. He is an Officer of The Order of Canada, his country’s highest civilian honor.

Mr. Parker will perform the Piano Concerto in A Minor of Edvard Grieg. Grieg was the musical voice of Norway at the end of the 19th century, revered internationally as a composer and regularly appearing successfully as a pianist and conductor. His music always has a compelling melodic sense supported by colorful harmony; this winning style is known from numerous songs and extensive music for piano.

After a brief intermission, Maestro Bay and the ASO take on Peter Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4 in F Minor, putting a glorious “button” on the ASO’s 100th classical concert season, looking forward to the next 100 years of exemplary orchestral performances.
