ASO to Help Feed America

February 19, 2013
  • Who: The Austin Symphony Orchestra
  • What: Orchestras Feeding America

The Austin Symphony Orchestra (ASO) is proud to join nearly 50 orchestras across the United States in this year’s Orchestras Feeding America campaign. Now in its 5th year, Orchestras Feeding America is a project of the League of American Orchestras (LAO) which has seen more than 250 LAO member orchestras from across the country collect over 400,000 pounds of food. The effort of these orchestras has helped spread the word about how and why orchestras are so necessary to their communities, beyond providing amazing music.

Hunger impacts all of our communities. In 2011, 17.9 million households in America were food insecure, households that included 33.5 million adults and 16.7 million children. Orchestras Feeding America provides emergency food assistance to approximately 37 million Americans each year.

The ASO’s collection efforts will benefit the Capital Area Food Bank of Texas. Partnering with the ASO in this campaign is Austin Symphony corporate sponsor Watkins Insurance Group. Items for donation can be dropped off at the ASO Box Office at 1101 Red River or the lobby of Watkins Insurance Group, 3834 Spicewood Springs Rd. Donations will also be accepted at the ASO’s March 8 & 9 classical concerts at the Long Center. As added incentive, the Austin Symphony will offer a “Buy One, Get One” discount in ticket prices for the March 8 & 9 concerts, which will feature internationally renowned harpist Yolanda Kondonassis.
